Carolina got a big-time effort from pitcher Sandy Thompson, but it wasn't enough to keep the Pittsburgh Pirates from winning the game, 5-2. Thompson threw 8.0 innings of 7-hit ball for the losing team. The Pirates, at 26-16, lead by one game in their division.

Andre Vigil Jr. provided a timely hit. The Pittsburgh center fielder delivered a 2-run triple in the top of the 11th inning to put the Pirates on top, 4-2. It was his only hit in the game, but he made it count.

"I still think this team can play even better," Vigil Jr. told the Pittsburgh Today.
