The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a win at Busch Stadium, knocking off the San Francisco Giants, 3-1. Starting pitcher Ron Stonge played a key role in the triumph. Mario Salazar earned the save, his 10th, for the Cardinals. With the victory, the Cardinals upped their record to 31-21.

Ed Johnson had an important at-bat with two out in the bottom of the first, when he hit a 2-run home run. His 8th home run of the season put St. Louis on top, 2-0.

"If we play well, we'll win our share of games," said Johnson. "The only team that can beat us is us."
