Washington and Pittsburgh got after it at PNC Park.

The Washington Nationals blasted the Pittsburgh Pirates, 17-4. Dana Martin was one of the hitting stars. He was 3-5 with a home run, a triple, and 2 walks. He scored 4 runs and drove in 2 for Washington. Ed Ray earned the win to go to 12-4. He allowed 4 runs on 8 hits, with 5 walks and 6 strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.

Washington relied on the bat of Brad Numbers to get the win. The designated hitter ripped a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put the Nationals ahead, 4-3. For the game, Numbers had 1 double and 1 home run in 5 at-bats.

"It was all gas and no brake on our side," said Numbers.

At 61-45, the Nationals find themselves in first place in the National League Eastern Division.
