Giants Score Late, Stun Reds, 5-3
|
San Francisco Giants starter Bob Riley was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Cincinnati Reds, 5-3. Dan Collins finished the game for San Francisco and earned his 27th save. The third-place Giants are 52-67.
Had Jesús Valentín not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Valentín hit a 2-run single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Giants.
Valentín called the win "a team effort."
