Pittsburgh Pirates starter Geoff Groves turned in an exceptional performance against the Mexico City Padres at PNC Park, resulting in a Pittsburgh win, 4-2. Hank Curry closed it out for his 14th save. Pittsburgh is 57-75 and Mexico City, with the loss, 71-61.

The Padres had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Pirates going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old catcher Luis Vargas came to the plate. Vargas hit a 2-run double on a 1-0 fastball from Mexico City hurler Ernie Hall. It was Vargas's 8th double of the year.

"The effort we put into this one paid off," Groves said.
