A 5-RBI performance from first baseman Ed Johnson, who is tied for 6th in the NL with a .357 on-base percentage, led the St. Louis Cardinals to a win over the New York (N) Mets, 6-1. The winning pitcher was Ron Stonge. His record is now 12-4. The left-hander went 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits for the Cardinals. The first-place Cardinals improved to 100-55.

Johnson had a big hit for St. Louis with two out in the top of the seventh. With St. Louis leading 2-1, Johnson hit a 2-run home run. It was his 28th home run of the season and put the Cardinals up, 4-1.
