UL News Flash: First-Year Player Draft

Today is the United League amateur draft. Everyone wants to be drafted first, but the real story lies in the obscure pick several rounds removed from the limelight. These are players in the draft, who might never make the big leagues, but some who could just as easily become Hall of Famers. In any case, the quest to find that hidden nugget begins in earnest today. Florida, Montreal, Keystone, Denver and San Francisco will have the first five selections. BNN analysts have rated these players as likely high draft picks:
1. Jeff Bagwell, 22 year-old 1B out of college. 2. Chipper Jones, 19 year-old 3B out of high-school. 3. Jim Edmonds, 21 year-old CF out of college. 4. Manny Ramirez, 19 year-old LF out of high-school. 5. Carlos Delgado, 19 year-old 1B out of high-school. 6. Chuck Knoblauch, 22 year-old 2B out of college. 7. Kenny Lofton, 23 year-old CF out of college. 8. Ivan Rodriguez, 19 year-old C out of high-school. 9. Carl Everett, 20 year-old CF out of college. 10. Vinny Castilla, 23 year-old 3B out of college.

Boston-Manhattan Deal: James for Mattingly

In a move that has fans in both cities buzzing, the Boston Federals and the Manhattan Gray Sox have agreed to a deal that will have 28-year old 1B Dion James heading to Manhattan in exchange for 28-year old 1B Don Mattingly and a 2nd round draft pick. Provided they pass a physical, the players should be with their respective teams in time for tomorrow's games.
Lifetime James is batting .331 and has hit 44 home runs.
During his career, Mattingly is batting .262 and has totaled 11 home runs.

Assenmacher Suffers Injury While Moving
Monday, February 11th , 1991
Washington reliever Paul Assenmacher was injured yesterday while moving furniture into his new home. Assenmacher reportedly suffered a partially torn labrum and is expected to be out of commission for up to 2 months. According to team officials, the injury will likely force him to miss the start of spring training.
