Braves Squeeze By New York, 4-3
|
Atlanta beat New York at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium 1974, escaping with a 4-3 win. The win in large part was due to shortstop Hanley Frias. He was 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2. Atlanta is now 56-96. New York is 81-71.
Batting in the bottom of the ninth, 23-year old first baseman Dan Grummitt had a real shot to win the game. New York pitcher Tony Long was determined not to let it happen. But with two outs, Grummitt hit a run-scoring single. The Braves had a walk-off triumph.
After the game, Atlanta manager Mike T applauded the team's effort. "They busted their humps out there," he said.
