Despite a great performance by Tampa Bay second baseman Russ Johnson, the New York Yankees defeated the Devil Rays by the score of 6-4 at Yankee Stadium 1976. Johnson went 2-2 with 2 singles and 2 walks. He scored 2 runs. Mike Salazar collected save number 4.
New York first baseman Ben Grieve contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the fifth. With two down, he hit a sinker to center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 102nd hit of the season and put the Yankees ahead, 4-3.
