Cubs Rally Late to Clip Montreal
|
In a low-scoring contest between the Chicago Cubs and the Montreal Expos, 14-year veteran Anthony Kelley proved to be the difference. The Chicago right-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-2 Cubs win. The winner was Kenny Rogers in relief. His record improves to 9-5. Joel Nies took the loss. The Expos, now 64-89, have lost 4 in a row.
Had Larry Walker not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Walker hit a 2-run single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Cubs.
"We had the right guys up at the right times," said Montreal manager Chuck Expos. "We just didn't cash in."
