Both teams had their chances, but the Kansas City Royals eventually prevailed.

Pedro Martinez was outstanding against Oakland. The right-hander, who finished 4th in the AL in strikeouts with 220 last year, had a circle change that was virtually unhittable at times. The result was a Royals 3-2 win. Earning his 1st save of the year was Mike Perez.

Martinez scattered 3 hits over 8 innings for the Royals. Now 1-1, Martinez has struck out 31 this season.

"I just made my pitches," said Martinez, "and the ball kept missing the bat."

The Athletics fall to 7-9 and continue their uneven start to the 1997 season.
