Florida Beats Cincinnati, 8-6
|
Fans were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown Cincinnati Reds take on the Florida Marlins.
The Florida Marlins defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 8-6, at Riverfront Stadium 1970. Ichiro Suzuki, who is tied for 8th in the NL with a .324 batting average, was a standout performer for Florida. His 4 hits included 3 singles and 1 double -- this in addition to the 2 runs he scored and 1 he knocked in. The win was credited to 32-year old right-handed pitcher Craig Holman in relief. His record improves to 1-2. Carl Pavano took the loss. R.A. Dickey earned the save for Florida, his 30th of the year.
Florida second baseman Ramon Valera contributed a timely at-bat in the top of the first. With two down, he hit a circle change to left-center field for a 2-run single. It was his 99th hit of the season and put the Marlins ahead, 3-0.
"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Valera.
The 4th-place Marlins now have a record of 55-51.
