Pedro Martinez, who finished 4th in the AL in strikeouts with 193 in 1994, imposed his will on the White Sox from the get-go. Relying mainly on his circle change, the right-hander spearheaded the 4-1 Kansas City triumph. Armando Barajas earned the save, his 16th in 22 tries. The Royals, at 72-36, lead by one game in their division.

Martinez was effective for Kansas City, seldom allowing the White Sox to square up a pitch. The right-hander tossed 111 pitches over 8 innings. He limited Chicago to just 1 run on 5 hits.
