Phillies Lose, 2-1
|
The Houston Astros got a marvelous performance from pitcher Bill Sandoval. The left-hander kept the Philadelphia offense from ever getting much traction. The result was an impressive 2-1 Houston victory at Veterans Stadium 1971. The winner was Sandoval. He threw 8.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The loser was Jose Bonifilio. B.J. Ryan collected save number 29.
Houston used the hitting of Jose Valentin to pick up the win. The shortstop clubbed a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put the Astros on top, 1-0. For the game, Valentin had 1 home run and 1 single in 3 at-bats.
"We had a good game plan," Sandoval said, "and we were able to execute it."
With the victory, the Astros record stands at 73-54.
