The Oakland Athletics beat the Texas Rangers, 7-2. Oakland pitcher and Houston, Texas, native Mike Sirotka led the way. Sirotka yielded 2 runs over 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5. His record improves to 1-5.

Oakland used a clutch at-bat from Gary Sheffield to capture the win. The shortstop hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Athletics ahead, 4-0. It was his lone hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Sheffield told the Oakland Citizen.
