5-Hit Blitz by Johnson Wednesday, July 14th , 1999 Even as a kid, Gary Johnson said his coaches told him the key to hitting was making contact, and letting everything else flow from there. At Salem Municipal Stadium, Johnson showed how well he learned that lesson. The 23-year-old left fielder had 5 hits in 5 at-bats for the Asheville Tourists, helping his team knock off the Salem Rebels by a score of 13-5. "They always said, just keep your eye on the ball, don't overswing, make contact and you never know what will happen," he said. "That's all I did." Gary Johnson hit a solo-shot off Corey Thurman in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit a two-run single in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off Jim Unknown in the 9th. Johnson is hitting .257 so far this season with 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He has 47 hits including 5 home runs, 21 walks and .327 OBP. View Boxscore |
