Phillies Turn Back Pirates, 4-3
|
The Philadelphia Phillies took Pittsburgh pitcher Walt Leverenz's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Phillies Stadium. The final score had Philadelphia getting past the Pirates, 4-3. Leverenz went 6.2 innings and allowed 1 run, striking out 3. Cactus Keck recorded the save for Philadelphia, his 18th of the season. At 36-43, the Phillies claim 4th place in the National League East.
Had Tex McDonald not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, McDonald hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Phillies.
"It feels good, just a great win all around," McDonald said after the game.
