Athletics Tear Continues with 8-1 Triumph
The Oakland Athletics defeated the Texas Rangers, 8-1, at Arlington Stadium. Pepper Peploski, who finished 2nd in the AL in on-base percentage with .402 last year, was a standout performer for Oakland. His 4 hits included 3 singles and 1 double -- this in addition to the 1 run he scored and 2 he knocked in. David Wells earned the win, while 21-year old right-handed pitcher Al Maul took the loss for Texas. Oakland, now 59-34, has stretched its winning streak to 10 games.

Oakland won the game in part because of Otto Lopez. The shortstop ripped a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Athletics ahead, 6-0. For the game, Lopez had 1 double and 1 home run in 5 at-bats.
