Blue Jays Come Up Short at Tampa Bay, 5-4
|
The Tampa Bay Rays besoiled an otherwise fine performance by Toronto right fielder Tim Lawrence by beating the Blue Jays, 5-4, at Tropicana Field. Lawrence went 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 times. Ron Smith got the win, improving to 15-13. He worked 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 2. Tampa Bay improves to 92-70 with the win. They lead their division by 7½ games.
The Rays got a big hit from first baseman Monte Underwood. In the bottom of the sixth, Underwood smacked a 3-run home run off Toronto pitcher Caleb Harrison. It was his 36th home run of the season. Suddenly, the Rays were ahead, 5-3.
"We'll take some time to unwind," said Underwood, "and then get after it again."
