Oakland beat Boston at Oakland Coliseum, escaping with a 5-4 win. The win in large part was due to center fielder Esteury Ruiz. He was 3 for 3 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times. The win belonged to Joe Boyle in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Brennan Bernardino took the loss for Boston. The victory makes Oakland 4-1.

Had Kyle McCann not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, McCann hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Athletics.

"If you want to be considered a good team, these are the kind of games you have to win," said Oakland manager Mark Kotsay.
