Starting pitcher Dave Smith pitched well enough to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Minnesota Twins, 4-3. The winner was St. Louis reliever Brandon Eisert, now 9-3. The loser was Matt Mercer. St. Louis currently is in third place in the National League Central at 67-61.

St. Louis used the timely hitting of Jake Bentley to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Cardinals on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Bentley. "And not try to do too much."
