The Portland Sea Dogs topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 6-5, in Eastern League action at Hadlock Field. The game was highlighted by the performance of Portland pitcher Drew Thurman. The Flying Squirrels, at 55-42, have lost 5 in a row.

The game was at a stalemate until center fielder C.J. Verdell came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Richmond pitcher Víctor Valentín, he hit a 2-1 changeup for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Portland on top, 6-5.

"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Verdell said.
