The St. Louis Cardinals wasted an inspired, 7-inning effort from starter Duncan Duimelaar, falling 2-1 to the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park. San Francisco reliever Quitério Gavio was the winner. His record is now 10-2. Duncan Duimelaar took the loss. Dave Bland was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 33 of 36 save opportunities.
Taylor Sparks, who finished 3rd in the NL in on-base percentage with .397 last year, came through for San Francisco with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. The first baseman went 2 for 3 for the game, including 1 home run and 1 double. He scored 1 run and collected 1 RBI.
"We'll hit the hot tub in good spirits tonight," said Sparks.
With the win, San Francisco raised its record to 92-70.
