Vargas Twirls Jacks to Shutout Win
There was no spell, no black magic -- just good pitching.

Sergio Vargas of the Nevada Jacks blanked the Washington Griffins, 7-0, at Sunset Stadium today, and he did it the old-fashioned way. After finishing the 4-hit, complete-game shutout, he was all smiles.

"I threw a lot of my pitches for strikes in this game," Vargas said. "I mixed it up and tried keeping these guys off balance."

Vargas walked 0 and struck out 9 in the victory.

"He was throwing his breaking ball for strikes and we never capitalized on any of his mistakes," Griffins manager Larry Gomberg said later.

In 13 starts this season Vargas has fashioned a 4-6 record and a 1.88 ERA.
