Athletics Prevail, 2-1, Over Detroit
|
Detroit pitcher Lucas Giolito gave the Athletics all they could handle, but in the end, Oakland left Oakland Coliseum with a win, 2-1. Giolito allowed 2 runs on 5 hits over 5.1 innings. The winner in relief was Jose Baez. He is now 1-0. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings. The save went to Andy Garcia, number 2 for him.
Oakland shortstop Mike Bates staked his team to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning, when he hit a sacrifice fly with runners on 1st and 3rd.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Oakland manager said.
Oakland is now 52-35, 7½ games up in the American League West Division.
