Phillies Need Extra Frames to Get Past Reds
|
Pitching was the name of the game in a tight contest between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cincinnati Reds. Philadelphia won it, 2-0. Philadelphia starter Francis Martes was in command. Philadelphia reliever Juan Mejia picked up the win, upping his record to 2-1. Jeremy Beasley was saddled with the loss. Darwinzon Hernandez earned the save for Philadelphia, his 4th.
Philadelphia used a clutch hit from Chris McKoon to snatch the win. The designated hitter belted a 2-run home run in the top of the 11th inning to put the Phillies ahead, 2-0. It was his only hit, but it was huge.
During his postgame press conference, Phillies manager Brett Phillies told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
The Phillies, at 67-54, sit in second place in the National League Metropolitan Division.
