Athletics Turn Back Pirates, 4-3
|
The Oakland Athletics did just enough to sneak past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-3, at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Oakland pitcher Darryl Davis, in particular, had a standout performance. Davis, now 5-2, was the winner. In 5.1 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 5, walking 3, and allowing 1 run. The second-place Athletics are 18-21.
The Athletics got a big at-bat from third baseman Roger McElroy. For the game, McElroy went 1 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 3rd home run of the season gave Oakland a 4-1 lead.
Pittsburgh manager Brandon Kirk said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
