Both teams had their chances, but the Detroit Tigers eventually prevailed.

Jorge Fernández added some punch to the Detroit offense, helping them outmuscle the Tampa Bay Rays, 8-7. Detroit used the timely hitting of Jim Velazaqau to seize the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Tigers on top, 8-7. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Velazaqau.
