The San Francisco Giants had to overcome a fine effort from Los Angeles pitcher Phil Watkins to grab a narrow 3-1 win at Presidio Park. Watkins went 6 innings and allowed 1 run. Eduardo Gallardo snagged the win in relief. In 3 innings, the left-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit. He's now 2-0 on the season. Juan Carlos Muñóz was called on to finish, recording his 15th save.

San Francisco took a 2-1 lead on Mel Franklin's 3rd double of the season. The run-scoring double, which Franklin hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Los Angeles pitcher Lorenzo Crespo visibly frustrated.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Franklin. "And not try to do too much."

San Francisco raised its record to 27-23 with the win.
