Facing elimination, the Papeete Black Pearls were looking for a savior. For today, at least, Alusio Veidreyaki delivered.

At Black Pearls Ballpark, the 35-year old pitched a game for the ages to fend off the Tafuna Clippers and help the Black Pearls close their deficit in the League Cup. Veidreyaki threw a 9-inning, complete-game shutout in the 3-0 Papeete win, striking out 8 and allowing 1 hit. The Black Pearls now trail 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.

Veidreyaki allowed no runs on 1 hit over 9 innings for the Black Pearls. He walked 3 and struck out 8.

"Not too many highlights on our side," said losing manager Jay A.

Game 6 is scheduled for Thursday at Tony Solaita Baseball Field in Tafuna.
