Athletics Get Past Bronx for 5-4 Win
Baseball fans saw a good contest between the Philadelphia Athletics and Bronx Bombers.

The Philadelphia Athletics did just enough to sneak past the Bronx Bombers, 5-4, at Municipal Stadium. Philadelphia pitcher Jerry Bowen, in particular, had a standout performance. Rob Gardner, now 1-1, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 0 and walking 0. José Martínez picked up the save for Philadelphia, his 3rd of the year.

Philadelphia took a 5-3 lead on Ed Kirkpatrick's 1st triple of the season. The 2-run triple, which Kirkpatrick hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Bronx pitcher Hiroyasu Nishikawa visibly frustrated.

"We found a way to get it done," Bowen said.

The Athletics sport a record of 12-27.
