Bowen Shuts Out Bronx, 2-0
Wednesday, July 26th , 1972
The Philadelphia Athletics did little to support starter Jerry Bowen against the Bronx Bombers, but it turned out he didn't need the help.
The left-hander spun a complete game shutout against the Bombers, striking out 8 and surrendering 3 hits. The performance from Bowen allowed Philadelphia to escape with the 2-0 win despite an anemic offense.
"Nobody came to me and said 'Jerry, we're gonna need you to win this one for us today,' but I could feel it," Bowen told BNN reporters following the win. "I'm the guy that will step up for you when you need it."
Presently Bowen has a 9-5 mark in 21 starts with a 2.37 ERA. He has given up 113 hits in 159.1 innings, struck out 186 and issued 39 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .203 batting average against him.
