Alexander Touches All Bases, Hits for Cycle
Wednesday, August 16th , 1972
Tom Alexander did everything he could for the Lodi Orions today -- literally.

The 24-year-old right fielder hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Orions, going for the cycle and helping them get past the Manitou Lakers, 16-6, at Orion Stadium.

"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Alexander reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."

In a game headed for the record books, Alexander banged out 4 hits in 5 at-bats and totaled 4 RBI and 4 runs scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."

"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."

Tom Alexander grounded out in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Kenny Shoemaker in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 5th, hit an RBI double in the 6th and singled in the 7th.

On the year Alexander is hitting .259 with 107 hits, 17 home runs, 65 RBIs, .376 OBP and has scored 77 runs.
