The California League Most Valuable Player Award has been picked for 1997 and the winner is Bakersfield third baseman Casey Blake.

He finished his outstanding season with a .317 batting average, 119 hits, 16 home runs, 101 RBIs, .402 OBP and 75 runs scored.

He received 5 first place votes out of a possible 10. Armando Morales of the Charlotte Legion finished second in voting with 5 first place votes, while Ezequiel Moreno of the San Jose Bees finished third.

Morales Scoops up CALL Top Hurler Award

Armando Morales was overpowering this season for the Charlotte Legion and earned the 1997 California League Pitcher of the Year Award for his efforts.

In a standout year he went 24-3 in 28 starts with 158 strikeouts in 241 innings and a 1.64 ERA.

He received 10 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Cliff Brantley of the Charlotte Legion finished second in voting, while Ronald Cook of the Charlotte Legion finished third.

CALL Top Skipper is Roggenburk of Bakersfield

A baseball manager's success usually depends on the talent of his club, but in the case of Garry Roggenburk, he seems to have taken the Bakersfield Dodgers to a higher level and gotten his just due. He was named this season's Manager of the Year in the California League for leading the team to a very rewarding season.

"Everyone on the team put in a lot of hard work this season," he told reporters. "It's always nice when it's acknowledged in some way."

Roggenburk led Bakersfield to a first place finish in the California League. The Dodgers ended up with a 116-24 record.
