WCRS Announces Outstanding Player Award
Tuesday, September 30th , 1997
At the age of 25, Wayne Newman of the Greenwood Braves could very well have his best years ahead of him.
It's a startling thought when you consider the year he had in 1997 was good enough to win the center fielder the Western Carolinas League Most Valuable Player Award.
"See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "That's my basic approach."
The top hitter put up a .326 batting average this year, as well as a .391 on-base percentage. He played 116 games and racked up 120 hits, 19 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, 43 RBIs and 56 runs scored.
He received 6 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Adam Piatt of the Gastonia Pirates finished second in voting, while Pete Blackford of the Greenwood Braves finished third.
