The Melbourne Demons beat the Essendon Knights, 7-3, at Punt Road Park. The win was due in part to pinch hitter Willie Monroe, who was 1 for 1 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. The winner was Melbourne reliever Norm Riethmuller, now 3-0. The loser was Phil Coupland. The win gives Melbourne a record of 14-11.

The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the tenth. With two out, Monroe hit a splitter from Phil Coupland for a grand slam home run. The Demons, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win.

"Good win for us, tough loss for them," said Monroe.
