The Arizona Diamondbacks did just enough to secure a victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-3, at Chase Field. Nobody did more than pitcher Luis Miguel Vallés. Vallés, now 2-1, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing 3 runs. Pittsburgh falls to 17-8.

The Pirates had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Diamondbacks going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the three-time All-Star Jim Williams came to the plate. Williams hit a 2-run double on a 2-0 fastball from Pittsburgh hurler Geoff Groves. It was Williams's 8th double of the year.

"I was a little disappointed," said Pittsburgh manager Phil Matthews. "We could've and should've scored more runs."
