Avery Sparkles in 4-0 Shutout
Saturday, September 29th , 1990
Steve Avery hurled a fine game for the Brooklyn Superbas at Frank Thomas Memorial Stadium today, holding the Montreal Voyageurs to 3 hits in a shutout win.

"When he started out, his command wasn't that good, but he's a tough guy," Brooklyn manager Timothy Widholm said. "The more pitches he throws, the better his command is."

The left-hander had 5 strikeouts and no walks in the 4-0 victory.

"An outstanding job," Montreal manager Bryan Gryka said. "We couldn't get anything going. Every time we got a hit, he got out of the jam. He pitched a terrific game."

This year Avery has a 8-3 mark in 13 starts with a 2.85 ERA. He has given up 88 hits in 98 innings, struck out 70 and issued 25 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .238 batting average against him.
