Fans brought energy and enthusiasm to the Syracuse Chiefs home opener. Manny Dávila started for the home team against Navy Shuler for the Rochester Red Wings. The Chiefs were unable to reward the home crowd with a win. The final score was 7-1, Rochester. Navy Shuler, though, was impressive. Shuler picked up the win for Rochester, going 7.2 innings. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0.

Rochester used a well-timed hit by Jeter Downs to capture the win. The second baseman socked a 2-run double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Red Wings ahead, 3-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.

"We're in a marathon, not a sprint," said Downs. "But I like how we're playing right now."
