Tuesday, September 30th , 1997
He may have less experience than most of his International League peers, but that didn't slow Fernando Tatis down at all in 1997.
At the age of 24, the Syracuse third baseman has been named the winner of the International League Most Valuable Player Award.
He had a .296 batting average and a .370 on-base percentage this year. In 123 games he piled up 134 hits, 30 doubles, 4 triples, 24 home runs, 88 RBIs and 80 runs scored.
"I'm blown away by the season I was able to put together," he said. "I'm looking forward to trying to do it all again next year."
He received 10 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Germaine Mayberry of the Jacksonville Bucks finished second in voting, while Melvin Rosario of the Tidewater Tides finished third.
