Montreal welcomes 27 selections from 2051 MLB Draft

MONTREAL — It’s a joyous day north of the border as the draft has come and passed and the Expos have a fresh crop of new talent in the minor league system. This year, team GM Ryan Wangman made his priorities clear, selecting four college pitchers in the top 45 picks. Ron Welch (4) and Tim Copeland (8) headline the class, both flamethrowing righties with developed fastballs that rely on their velocity to sit down batters. Tim Anderson (37) and Garry Park (44) were the next two selections off of the board, and they look to be major league contributors sooner rather than later.

“We took a look at our biggest weakness and we addressed it,” Wangman said. “We’ve got a bevy of talented hitters in the system, but it won’t mean anything if we can’t surround them with top class arms, so we were aggressive in going out and getting them. I can’t wait to see what these guys do the rest of the season in the minors and in their major league careers beyond that.”

Here are the top four Expo picks:

Ron Welch (4)
Tim Copeland (8)
Tim Anderson (37)
Garry Park (44)
